Jim Rankin Wins WPTDeepStacks Arizona

Jim Rankin (pictured) topped a field of 286 players to win the WPTDeepStacks Arizona Main Event on Monday night at the Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson, Arizona. Rankin was awarded $37,346 in prize money after winning a final table that clocked in at six hours of play.

Cards got into the air at 1 p.m. between the final nine players, and after a series of double ups Juan Sosa kicked off the eliminations by falling in ninth place. Luke Saltus followed Sosa to the rail in eighth place just five minutes later. There were four double ups after that before the chip leader at the start of day, Chuck Weaver, was eliminated in seventh place. Jim Rankin then doubled through Thomas Zanot, and that led to Zanot’s demise in sixth place.

The final five players decided to chop up the remaining prize pool, but they would still play it out for $10,000 and the $3,000 Championship Package for the winner. The eliminations moved swiftly after that, with Chad Mizner (fifth place), Ajay Gnanasambanthan (fourth place), and Sean Berrios (third place) falling in succession to take us down to a heads-up final between Jim Rankin and Balram Bhandari.

Rankin and Bhandari decided to chop up the remaining $10,000 before the start of heads-up play, and after playing for a level they were pretty much even. At that point Bhandari and Rankin struck a deal where Bhandari would receive the $3,000 Championship Package in exchange for $1,000 of his cash going to Rankin.

The two players then shoved all in blind preflop with Bhandari holding 6s3c and Rankin revealing 3h2c. The board ran out 7d3d2d8sQs and that gave Rankin the victory. Rankin took home $37,346 in prize money along with the WPTDS trophy. Congratulations to our newest WPTDS champion – Jim Rankin!
